Legal Officer - National Gallery of Australia

Allygroup is seeking a Legal Officer (with 2-4 years of experience as a lawyer) to join the Legal and Procurement team at the National Gallery of Australia. This is a full-time, ongoing opportunity as a placement within the National Gallery. The position is available on-site at the Canberra office and/or through flexible working arrangements, including working from home.

Mandatory requirement:

  • Admitted as a legal practitioner 

  • Hold a current practicing 

  • Australian Citizen

  • 2-4 years’ experience as a lawyer 

  • Pass a police check prior to engagement

  • Hold a baseline security clearance

Core duties and responsibilities

The successful candidates will be required to advise on compliance issues that are common to most Commonwealth entities such as commercial contacts, procurement and privacy. The role also presents a rare opportunity to become involved in issues that are unique to cultural institutions including intellectual property, the loan and acquisition of art, agreements with artists, provenance advice, and a broad range of commercial matters. Additionally gaining hands-on practice management type experience.

  • Research, interpret and apply established legislation, policies, procedures and better practices relating to all facets of the agency's operations including commercial contracts, loans, donors, funding and exhibition activities, procurement. 

  • Undertake high-level analysis of complex issues and inquiries and prepare defensible and pragmatic advice based on all matters within the position’s remit. This may include the application of Commonwealth laws, rules and policies, whilst working closely with the team to ensure the advice is proactive, user centred advice and is tailored to meet the broad range of needs across the agency.

  • Assist with contract management, contract development and negotiation activities including assisting with administrative tasks related to contract reporting as well as contract registers and related records. 

  • Contribute to and conduct staff training on legal and compliance matters and maintain strong relationships with teams.

  •  Perform practice management and legal administration functions. 

  • Other duties as required commensurate with your skills and abilities.

  • Take ethical and professional obligations as a lawyer seriously, and act with integrity at all times.
