Legal Practice and Finance Manager (EL1 level equivalent)

Allygroup is seeking an energetic and talented Legal Practice and Finance Manager for a secondment opportunity with a government department. The contract is for 12 months, from April 2025 to April 2026, and is based in Canberra.

In this role, you will oversee various legal practice management activities to support program outcomes. you will ensure effective management and compliance with procurement, budget, and recruitment activities, liaising with both program and corporate personnel, as well as external legal service providers, to meet deliverables and milestones.

Candidates must hold NV2 clearance or above and be available to work on a full-time basis. 

Key Responsibilities include:

  • Manage all aspects of the division’s legal practice

  • Oversee the LEX Matter Management System and develop the division’s precedent database

  • Ensure compliance with rules and guidelines, including corporate procurement, budget, and recruitment

  • Coordinate training for divisional staff

  • Lead external legal reporting obligations

  • Prepare data analysis for legal, financial, and other reporting

Qualifications and Experience: Our ideal candidate will be highly motivated individual with proven experience in handling complex or sensitive work under broad direction, driving legislative and policy compliance assurance activities and supporting the procurement and contract management of external legal services. Independence and contribution to team and divisional planning are expected. 

Responsibilities include:

  • Sound decision-making and judgement

  • Strategic thinking and high-level work production

  • Managing the LEX matter management system

  • Coordinating training for divisional staff

  • Engaging with external legal service providers, including contract negotiation and management

  • Ensuring best practices in legal practice management within the department and other agencies

  • Managing the division’s legal services budget

  • Strong communication and stakeholder management skills

  • Assisting in corporate procurement and recruitment activities

  • Contributing to the division’s outcomes and priorities

  • High-level ICT skills, especially in Excel and database/case management applications

  • Experience with Australian Government procurement policies

Desirable knowledge and experience include:

  • Experience with LEX matter management system and ability to coordinate relevant training for the division. 

  • Strong understanding of legal compliance and risk management

  • Proven Experience in driving legislative and policy compliance assurance

  • Demonstrated expertise in managing division budgets and contract negotiations

  • Exceptional written and verbal communication skills
