APS6/EL1 Legal Adviser (International Sanctions Specialist)

Allygroup is seeking an experienced lawyer with a strong background in international sanctions law to join our high-profile client for an initial 6-month secondment opportunity with the possibility of a 6-month extension. This role involves providing expert advice on international law obligations and their implementation into domestic law. The successful candidate will play a crucial role in interpreting United Nations Security Council (UNSC) Resolutions on sanctions and ensuring their smooth incorporation into Australian legislation.

The ideal candidate will have strong knowledge and understanding of international sanctions regimes, exceptional analytical skills, and a proven track record of advising clients on international law. Candidates must be based in Canberra and hold an NV2 clearance or above to be considered for this role. 

Key Responsibilities:

  • provide expert legal advice on the interpretation and implementation of UNSC Resolutions into Australian domestic sanctions law

  • drive an ongoing project to incorporate UNSC sanctions into domestic legislation

  • develop mechanisms to ensure future UNSC resolutions are smoothly implemented under Australian law

Mandatory Requirements:

  • experience in international law

  • current NV2 security clearance

  • availability to work full-time

  • ability to attend the office as needed to access classified material

  • familiarity with internal procedures and interagency cooperation on sanctions work
