EL1 Senior Government Lawyer

Allygroup has an exciting opportunity for a senior lawyer to work in a small high-profile government agency. This is a six-month secondment opportunity with the possibility of further extensions.

The ideal candidate will be based in Canberra and available to work full-time in the office. There may also be an opportunity to work from home 2 - 3 days per week.

Key responsibilities: 

  • Provide corporate enabling services, including reviewing and advising on supplier contracts, licences, and leases, as well as advising on probity requirements in procurement processes.

  • Interpret and advise on the implications of operational actions across a broad range of Commonwealth and State legislation, rules, and foreign compliance functions.

  • Negotiate, draft, and provide advice on various legal documents, including legislative instruments and information-sharing agreements, as well as commercial documents.

  • Collaborate with the Office of Parliamentary Counsel (OPC), Australian Government Solicitor (AGS), and Attorney-General's Department (AGD) to prepare and review drafting instructions, ensuring compliance with agency policies and legal obligations.

  • Instruct external legal service providers in accordance with the Legal Services Directions 2017, to manage litigation or prepare documentation and legal advice.

  • Liaise with a wide range of internal and external stakeholders.

  • Develop and deliver online and in-person training sessions for internal and external stakeholders.

  • Have strong government experience across commercial and administrative law, and be able to deliver clear and comprehensive legal services and advice to a diverse range of clients.

  • Operate effectively and collaboratively within a small team in a fast-paced environment with competing priorities.

  • Manage a busy workload independently and with minimal supervision, demonstrating flexibility across a range of legal matters.

  • Exhibit strong leadership and management capabilities to ensure timely resolution of issues and quality outcomes.

  • Demonstrate extensive experience and skill in negotiating sensitive legal and operational matters without compromising the integrity of legal advice, offering holistic and strategic solutions.

  • Communicate effectively, both in writing and verbally, and demonstrate expertise in fostering productive relationships with colleagues and other government agencies.

  • Provide effective information sharing, training, and briefing sessions to support the development and maintenance of legal knowledge within the agency and externally.

Essential Requirements:

  • A law degree and eligibility to hold a restricted government legal practising certificate.

  • Australian citizenship.

  • The ability to obtain and maintain a security clearance at Baseline level.
