EL1 Senior Government Lawyer

Allygroup has an exciting opportunity for a senior lawyer to work in a small high-profile government agency. This is a six-month secondment opportunity with the possibility of further extensions.

The ideal candidate will be based in Canberra and available to work full-time in the office. There may also be an opportunity to work from home 2 - 3 days per week.

Key responsibilities: 

  • Provide corporate enabling services, including reviewing and advising on supplier contracts, licences, and leases, as well as advising on probity requirements in procurement processes.

  • Interpret and advise on the implications of operational actions across a broad range of Commonwealth and State legislation, rules, and foreign compliance functions.

  • Negotiate, draft, and provide advice on various legal documents, including legislative instruments and information-sharing agreements, as well as commercial documents.

  • Collaborate with the Office of Parliamentary Counsel (OPC), Australian Government Solicitor (AGS), and Attorney-General's Department (AGD) to prepare and review drafting instructions, ensuring compliance with agency policies and legal obligations.

  • Instruct external legal service providers in accordance with the Legal Services Directions 2017, to manage litigation or prepare documentation and legal advice.

  • Liaise with a wide range of internal and external stakeholders.

  • Develop and deliver online and in-person training sessions for internal and external stakeholders.

Essential Requirements:

APS5/APS6 Government Lawyer (Legal and Enforcement)

Allygroup is seeking two lawyers with demonstrated experience in administrative law, employment law, civil penalties, or other complex civil litigation, regulatory compliance and enforcement, privacy and information law (including FOI), or contract and procurement law. This opportunity is available for an initial 12-month non-ongoing APS position or Section26 transfer, with the possibility of further extension.

Candidates must be based in Canberra, Melbourne, or Sydney, and hold a minimum of NV1 security clearance to be considered. This is a full-time position, but flexible or hybrid working arrangements will be considered for the right candidate.

Key responsibilities: 

  • Corporate Legal Support: Assist with corporate functions, including employment law, procurement, contract reviews, and general commercial legal advice

Candidates will also have the opportunity to work across various other legal streams, providing ample opportunities for diverse legal experience. These duties include:

  • Regulatory, Intelligence, and Enforcement Support: Provide legal advice on the Anti-Money Laundering and Counter-Terrorism Financing (AML/CTF) Act and related subjects, supporting regulatory, intelligence, and enforcement functions

  • Policy, Law Reform, and Guidance: Contribute to AML/CTF policy development, law reform initiatives, and guidance for reporting entities

  • Training and Capability Development: Develop and deliver legal training to enhance staff understanding of the AML/CTF Act and legal capabilities

  • Privacy and FOI Support: Support Privacy and FOI functions, including privacy impact assessments and advice on data breaches

  • Enforcement Support: Assist enforcement functions, including managing requests for affidavits and witness statements

Paralegal (High-profile Federal Government Agency)

Legal Review Manager (Disclosure Review Team)

Allygroup is a seeking dedicated and hardworking Legal Review Manager to join a high-profile federal government agency's disclosure review team. The secondment is initially set for three months, with the possibility of up to two additional three-month extensions.

The successful candidate must work in-person at either the Sydney or Melbourne offices.

Previous experience required:

  • Proven experience in managing document reviews for discovery or disclosure, including leading teams.
